Maria Arango's
QUEST: 1,000 Woodcuts
February 2009 Update - 255 Completed
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Hello dear friends!
I am just barely getting caught up on all the stuff I
fell behind during my art festival spree. I just can't believe there
is so much to do in life...and I'm self employed!
In any case, just so you know, I'm busy teaching workshops,
working on getting a grant or two, carving the series of 8 large blocks
for the Goldwell series that I started during my residency last year
and catching up on home-projects. I'm also revising my book on art
festivals, mostly adding a chapter on "tightening the belt"! Rough
couple of years for artists ahead, I'm afraid.
Next year I'm back at the Valley of Fire visitor's center
(if the current budget conditions can keep Nevada State Parks open!).
Still a ways off but save June 2010 to get out, do some hiking and
see some new Valley of Fire woodcuts.
As always, up to date on the latest images:

Me in a tree,
No one looks up,
No one can find me,
Or laugh at me

News
That last print was done using the traditional Japanese method
using water-based pigment and multiple blocks. The method is tedious but
I really had fun this time and may just do a few more like it. A huge advantage
is that clean up is very easy and all the work is done by hand, even the
printing, so the whole adventure becomes portable. I'm warming up my camper
trailer and perhaps will try some little prints on site around the neighboring
desert. We'll see what happens...
"The
Latest" outlines
my adventures with a bit more frequency than I can send out this newsletter.

Aside from that, it's the Chinese Lunar Year of the Ox, so
I'm taking a lesson from the hard-working beasts and plan on keeping the
plow on the ground.
