(Excerpt from Introduction by Solange (Michele Salzano)
"My vision was to put forth a collection of my poetry, complete with paintings to visually express how my spirit feels. So, for many years, my mission was to find an artist, an artist who painted how I felt. I first SAW Maria's work at an art fair. And it was her work that shocked me to my very core. She HAD drawn what I HAD written. As, I looked at her figures engraved in the wood, I felt as if I wer looking at myself. I left without telling her what I was dreaming of. And later contacted her...""...My task was to decide now, which ones I wanted to include in the collection and which ones I didn't. Words cannot express the joy I feel having found Maria. And the privilege I now possess having her art grace my pages. Every fits together so exactly. My vision is clear. So, find a quiet moment, alone, lie back and feel the painted thought as the spirit appears in the writtne word, or is that the poem which transposes through the spirit of the art? Call it: Painted Poems. Poetic Engravings, The Painted Word, Engraved Collection, Carved Words, The Way My Soul Feels...ENTERING SPIRIT..." Solange, July 2002
And my introduction (not in the book and not as beautiful as hers, after all...she's the writer):
This beautiful book contains over 35 poems side by side with black and white illustrations (from original woodcut prints) in an engaging format. What amazed me most about Michele's poetry is precisely the same thing that amazed her. We had a collection of images and a collection of poems that matched perfectly, from both our perspectives, yet we had never met before and lead lives that might be described as quite different. But we are both artists at heart and very much alike that way who saw the same vision and came together for this very exciting project...and it is now ready for the world to see.
