Moonshadow
Woodcut 2008
11" x 15"
Edition 56
Print Title: Moon Shadow
Paper Dimension: 10 x 15 inches
Image Dimension: 7 x 13 inches
Block: Plank cherry and cork
Ink: Daniel Smith water-based and dry pigment
Paper: Arches Black
Edition: 56
Comments: Process: Still working with cork to achieve softer images. I wanted to see what cork would print like on black paper and use the paper as a shadow coming through the semi-transparent inks. As a bonus, the cork warped when I washed it after proofing and thus made the roller ride on the edges of the moon, making the ink in the center a bit softer. I added irridescent dry pigment (Daniel Smith) to all the colors to make the print glow--look at it under very dim light.

Image: Exploring Yoga poses again and the marriage of man/woman and nature. This seems more pertinent these days when the impact of humans on nature is finally the topic of talk in the media.
I thought of over-printing the figure once more, but I liked the melding of woman and moon, set off by the darker paper between the two.

Bebiendo la Luna (Drinking the Moon)
Woodcut 2002
Paper 11" x 15"
Edition 60
Block: Cherry
Ink: Mixes of red, dark red, umber, blue, black
Paper: BFK Lightweight Buff

Process: This is a "puzzle" piece, in which the block was sawn in 3 pieces prior to printing. Each piece is inked separately with its separate color, the block is assembled at press. There is a rainbow mix on each piece, which means I mixed two inks while loading the roller. The result is a color print done in one single pass.

Image: Yoga poses in nature seem like an endless inspiration for new works. The desert is very conducive to meditation and becoming one with nature. In the Southwest desert, hiking at night is an incredibly peaceful experience. The moon seems to light the desert in shadows and, amazingly, the landscape is perfectly visible, quiet as a whisper and full of wonder.

Traditionally, woodcuts in sets are the same theme, size and type of paper. They are matched sets, meaning the same edition number appears on both (whenever possible). Artists often work in a "series" because we have an idea that develops in several different but closely related ways. Serious art collectors often purchase entire series directly from the artist as they become more valuable when an entire set is kept together. Because they are a matched set, they look great framed together. Signed Numbered Woodcut Limited edition Figures Surrealism 12 to 36 in
