Image: I received a shipment of boxwood from my supplier in Japan. I guess I was supposed to cut it in the traditional rectangular shapes of engraving blocks, but instead I fell in love with the irregular natural shapes of the cross section of the tree. I started thinking about the life of the tree and how I wish I could "read" the life of this one in the beautiful delicate rings. A series was born.
Each of the eight wood engravings represents the trials and tribulations that a tree "shows us" in the growth rings. In periods of struggle, the tree doesn't grow very much and the ring for that year is narrow. In periods of abundant rain, the growth rings are wide. When a tree is hit by lightning, for example, a corresponding scar is seen in the rings. The science of reading the rings is truly a forensic investigation!

Traditionally, woodcuts in sets are the same theme, size and type of paper. They are matched sets, meaning the same edition number appears on both (whenever possible). Artists often work in a "series" because we have an idea that develops in several different but closely related ways. Serious art collectors often purchase entire series directly from the artist as they become more valuable when an entire set is kept together. Because they are a matched set, they look great framed together.

Process:
Woodcuts and wood engravings are made by drawing an image on a block of wood, usually cherry in my case, then carving out the negative spaces. After carving, what is left is a big "stamp" of the desired image. I roll ink with a roller over the woodcut, place a piece of handmade paper on the inked block, apply pressure and transfer the image on the paper.
