Red Rock Canyon
Woodcut
9"x16"
Edition 200
Block: Cherrywood
Ink: Black, tinted, oil based
Paper: Lotka, made in Nepal
Process: One block, sketched while hiking
Image: Just outside Las Vegas, Nevada, lies a small canyon painted in sandstone and lime. Rock climbers and tourists alike flock to it and visit the sights. But the most beautiful gifts of the canyon are reserved for those who dare climb the peaks, venture in during the quiet of the night, or walk its rugged lands in the brutal heat of the summer--when no other living soul is around and the subtle sounds of nature fill the heated air.
Process:
Woodcuts and wood engravings are made by drawing an image on a block of wood, usually cherry in my case, then carving out the negative spaces. After carving, what is left is a big "stamp" of the desired image. I roll ink with a roller over the woodcut, place a piece of handmade paper on the inked block, apply pressure and transfer the image on the paper.
All my woodcuts are made in limited editions, signed and numbered in pencil by the artist.
Designed, cut and hand-printed by the artist
