Surge
Woodcut
30" x 20"
Edition 100
Block: Cherrywood
Ink: Rainbow roll, umber to siena
Paper: Daphne, a light and fibrous beautiful hand-made paper made in Nepal
Process: Straight forward woodcut. Used very small chisels to achieve detail, down to 1mm.
Image: This image literally came "out of the wood". I picked up a new piece of cherrywood, sanded it and allowed the grain of the wood to dictate where the male model figures would go. After creating the first few, the rest just fell into place. I did a few of these woodcuts where the figures run into each other to create a sense of movement. The grain of the wood helps with the illusion and guides the compositon.
Process: Woodcuts are made by drawing an image on a block of wood, usually cherry in my case, then carving out the negative spaces. After carving, what is left is a big "stamp" of the desired image. I roll ink with a roller over the woodcut, place a piece of handmade paper on the inked block, apply pressure and transfer the image on the paper.
