Wood Engraving
Paper 12" x 10"
Image 5.5" diameter
Edition 100
Block: Boxwood round
Ink: Umber
Paper: Daphne Lightweight or Okawara
Process: Wood engraving
Image: I received a shipment of boxwood from Japan. I guess I was supposed to cut it in the traditional rectangular shapes of engraving blocks, but instead I fell in love with the irregular natural shapes of the cross section of the tree. I started thinking about the life of the tree and how I wish I could "read" the life of this one in the beautiful delicate rings. A series was born.
The entire Life of a Tree Series is available as a Collector's Set in my shop section labeled Sets
Process:
Woodcuts and wood engravings are made by drawing an image on a block of wood, usually cherry in my case, then carving out the negative spaces. After carving, what is left is a big "stamp" of the desired image. I roll ink with a roller over the woodcut, place a piece of handmade paper on the inked block, apply pressure and transfer the image on the paper.
