Joshua Forest

Edition 200

Block: Cherrywood
Ink: Black, tinted, oil based
Paper: Banana Bark Paper cream color with inclusions, bits of bark
Process: One block, sketched while hiking
Image: Deserts have forests too! Not those lush Northwest pine forests nor the thick and impenetrable Southern swamp forests, but forests nonetheless. Rugged Joshua trees "drink" perhaps once or twice a year, growing to more than 30 feet high and bearing a hard luscious fruit that is unfit for human consumption. Through 120 degree F heat, the Joshuas can't have leaves, in the true sense of the word, for to have leaves in the desert is to expose precious surface to the sun rays and their relentless evaporative power--to lose moisture is to die.

Process:
Woodcuts and wood engravings are made by drawing an image on a block of wood, usually cherry in my case, then carving out the negative spaces. After carving, what is left is a big "stamp" of the desired image. I roll ink with a roller over the woodcut, place a piece of handmade paper on the inked block, apply pressure and transfer the image on the paper.

All my woodcuts are made in limited editions, signed and numbered in pencil by the artist.
Sold in pristine/never framed condition (sold unmatted/unframed).
