Newel
Woodcut
28" x 20"
Edition 100
Block: Cherry
Ink: Burnt Umber
Paper: Hand-made Daphne, a fragile sheer beautiful paper
Process: Straight forward woodcut. I work of the model books and enjoy the pages full of the same pose but viewed from different angles.
Image: Inspired by a silly e-mail called "a word a day." The word "newel," meaning either the post at the bottom of a stairway or the center support for a spiral staircase, somehow struck this image. I enjoyed the feeling of solid vertical and fragile horizontals. Most people think of DNA when they see it and most collectors of this print have curiously been in the medical or architectural professions.
Process: Woodcuts are made by drawing an image on a block of wood, usually cherry in my case, then carving out the negative spaces. After carving, what is left is a big "stamp" of the desired image. I roll ink with a roller over the woodcut, place a piece of handmade paper on the inked block, apply pressure and transfer the image on the paper. Signed Numbered Woodcut Limited edition Figures Surrealism 12 to 36 in
